How to find the perfect fragrance for your wedding day

A collection of fragrances

For those planning a wedding later this year, choosing the perfect fragrance can be a meaningful part of the big day. A fresh, elegant scent can complement a late summer celebration, something light enough to avoid being overpowering, yet distinctive enough to stand out within the bridal party. With so many options available, understanding how to select the right fragrance and apply it effectively can help create a scent memory that lasts long after the day itself.

Christina Kamester, head of fragrances at So…?, Scentology and Escentual’s affordable fragrance brands, explains: “Choosing a scent is a very personal choice. Many brides like to choose something new that will forever be associated with their special day. Ensure you trial wearing a new scent a few times beforehand, not just smelling it on paper but on your skin, as everyone’s skin chemistry reacts differently with fragrance, to make sure you are happy with the scent and its level of strength and longevity.

“A good way to ensure it lasts on the day is to layer the same fragrance across different applications, where available: shower gel or bath soak, then body moisturiser, before applying the perfume to pulse points (wrists, elbows, neck), and finally a hair mist or a light spritz of perfume to scent your hair. This way you build layers of the fragrance, which should improve longevity and create multiple layers of scent, but do trial this beforehand so you are comfortable with the strength of the fragrance. A lot of brides like to go for something traditionally romantic, and the obvious choice here is a pretty floral, perhaps to match the flowers in the bouquet. Some like the radiance of white florals such as jasmine, orange blossom and tuberose to match the white theme of a wedding dress. These white florals often have strong projection and possess a sunny, uplifting, radiant olfactive profile, perfect to match a joyful day. They are also a good match for spring through to late summer.

“It sounds like you do not want a powerhouse fragrance but do want individuality, so skin-like scents might be more your style. These tend to be more intimate, cosy musky scents, often described as “your skin but better”, with the OG skin scent Glossier You being a good place to start. A more recent option is the softer, muskier twist on La Vie Est Belle, La Vie Est Belle Vanilla Nude, which is a perfect take on this trend. Narciso Rodriguez Poudrée, Musc For Her flankers and All of Me are also worth exploring for their various takes on intimate, musky, powdery feminine scents, though some are more powerful than others. If you are really looking to wear a scent no one else has, fragrance layering is worth considering. Different from layering a single fragrance across multiple products, this type of layering uses different fragrances to create a new scent. Many brands are now promoting this within their ranges, such as SO…? Unique, Phlur, Kayali, Le Labo, Jo Malone and Tom Ford, but you can also experiment across different brands to create a combination that is totally unique to you. Just make sure that when you are practising, you note the number of sprays and the order of fragrances, so when you find that perfect combination you have a record of the magic recipe to repeat on your special day!”
