Train hard, recover smarter: why recovery is becoming the biggest trend in fitness

Talk given by BFT Fitness

Sore muscles used to be a badge of honour. The harder the workout, the better. But while people are still training hard, there's a growing focus on something that happens after your workout ends: recovery.

Global fitness brand, Body Fit Training (BFT) has recently teamed up with recovery experts PILLAR Performance to show the importance of getting recovery right.

"We're seeing a real shift in how people approach fitness," said Sarah Nehme, Head of Programming at BFT. "People are asking us just as many questions about recovery because they're recognising it's a critical part of seeing results and staying consistent."

Recovery is no longer an afterthought

For years, fitness culture celebrated the idea that more was always better – train harder, go longer, push further. But the conversation is changing.

"Today's fitness enthusiasts are becoming just as interested in how they recover as they are in how they train," added Sarah. "Recovery is an essential part of any training programme because it helps people get more out of every workout.

"Without sufficient recovery, progress can stall, fatigue can build, sleep can suffer and the risk of injury can increase. Taking recovery seriously means members can come back feeling ready to train at the top of their game."

What was once considered the domain of elite athletes is now becoming a key part of everyday fitness routines. Whether it's prioritising sleep, scheduling rest days or supporting recovery through nutrition, people are taking recovery seriously.

The three supplements everyone is talking about

As recovery continues to move into the mainstream, people are becoming ever more interested in supplements that can help support their training goals and overall wellbeing. Three supplements in particular are attracting attention:

Magnesium – widely recognised for its role in supporting muscle recovery, relaxation and sleep quality

Creatine – one of the most researched sports nutrition ingredients, commonly used to support strength, power and exercise performance

Collagen – gaining popularity for its potential role in supporting joints, tendons, ligaments and connective tissue.

For Sarah, "Supplements can be a great addition to a wellness routine - they're designed to support healthy habits rather than replace them. However, there's still no substitute for consistent training, quality sleep and good nutrition, which remain the foundations of long-term health and performance."

Why science matters more than ever

With the supplement market expanding rapidly, people have more choice than ever before. But with that choice comes a growing demand for credibility.

"Rather than chasing the latest trend, people are becoming more selective about the products they use," added Sarah. "Members are looking for evidence-backed solutions and greater transparency around ingredients, dosage levels and research."

That's where brands like PILLAR Performance have found a growing audience. Focused on science-backed micronutrition, PILLAR is trusted by more than 200 sporting teams globally and positions its products around research-based ingredients and formulations.

"Our partnership with PILLAR reflects growing member interest in recovery and aligns with our evidence-based approach to training," concluded Sarah. "By combining expert programming with trusted recovery solutions, we're helping members get more from every workout."

Beyond the workout

Today's members are increasingly looking for support across multiple areas of wellbeing, from recovery and sleep to nutrition and performance. In response, fitness brands are expanding their focus and creating more holistic health and fitness experiences.

The partnership between BFT and PILLAR reflects this broader trend, with both brands placing greater emphasis on what happens around training, not just during it.

While exercise remains at the centre of any fitness journey, recovery is becoming part of the conversation. For many people, the focus is no longer on how hard they train, but how well they recover afterwards.
