Lovestruck suitors in Bournemouth are among the most extravagant when it comes to splashing the cash on engagement rings.
Research has revealed that the Dorset coastal resort is fifth in a league of the nation's biggest spenders on expensive bling for popping the question. Compiled by national antique silverware and jewellery outlet AC Silver, the list reveals the UK towns and cities that spend the most and the least on engagement rings.
The findings show that those in London fork out the most, with an average spend of £8,000, and Burnley in the north, spends the least - an average of just £347 per sparkler.
AC Silver analysed the price of engagement rings bought through its site, by customers across the UK over the past five years, and found that the biggest spenders varied wildly depending on location, with a seemingly clear north-south divide.
Residents of Edinburgh and Oxford were closely behind London in second and third positions followed by Brighton and then Bournemouth in fifth place. The most frugal regions were mostly in the north of England, with Burnley spending the least followed by Wigan and Bradford.
Andrew Campbell, founder of AC Silver said, “A lot of pressure is put on people when planning a proposal, including finding the perfect ring. We believe wherever you live and whatever your budget, you should be able to treat your special someone to a stunning ring. Thankfully though, the rule of having to spend the equivalent of two or three months salary to buy an engagement ring is long gone."
