Former professional footballer Chris Kamara's bid to land Christmas number one with his debut song 'Here's to Christmas', has sparked a rush of entries to a luxury New Forest hotel's singing competition to win a free festive wedding.

The four-star Balmer Lawn Hotel & Spa in Hampshire's picturesque New Forest has been inviting entries from couples across the UK looking to secure the ultimate prize – a free winter wedding at the luxury venue with catering included.

Better known for his comical sports punditry than his musical talents, Chris Kamara's vocals have inspired a wave of couples eager to exchange their vows at the picturesque hotel to pick up the microphone and submit their entries ahead of the looming deadline on Saturday, 30th November.

The competition, dubbed 'marryoke', has been launched to mark the hotel's 1,000th wedding and offers newlyweds-to-be the chance to tie the knot with its winter wedding package worth £5,000. It includes catering for 50 people; covering a three-course meal, a glass of wine per person, tea and coffee, evening buffet, as well as free accommodation for the bride and groom on the night, along with a bespoke wedding video.

All couples have to do is submit their video entries to Balmer Lawn via WeTransfer, along with three reasons why they deserve to win and their ideal winter wedding date.

The hotel's general manager Michael Clitheroe said, "We've been left amazed at the entries coming in as we enter the final stretch of the competition. I think Chris Kamara's surprisingly smooth Christmas sing-along has given others the confidence to follow suit.

"The beauty of this competition is that all the couples have to do is sing, it's that easy. Our in-house judging panel will then select the overall winner, as well as decide who finishes second and third - who will be offered a £1,000 discount off their wedding should they book with Balmer Lawn for 2020."

Couples can mime their entry over well-known songs or sing it themselves to earn extra bonus points. What's more, if they write their own version of a song letting Balmer Lawn know how much they want to get married at the hotel, they stand to gain even more bonus points.

Michael added, "We're now just a matter of weeks away from the deadline, so couples are urged to get their entries in sooner rather than later."
