November/December 2018 |

Christmas has always been a big deal in our house; holly and ivy trailing from every crevice, a real tree (you can’t beat the natural fir-tree scent) and all the trimmings. There was a time when I was hell-bent on making everything myself from the cards to the present tags, and holly wreaths to table decorations, and that’s without even starting on the food. One year I toiled into the early hours making my own chocolate truffles only to realise Thorntons do it better!
Now I’m older and wiser, I try to be kinder to myself and let go of many of the tasks that cause me unnecessary stress. The things I’m good at, like knocking up untold batches of mince pies and making a mean turkey soup, remain on my to-do list, but now I’m determined to allow more time for enjoying other things, like celebrating with friends and family, enjoying a glass of fizz or three!
It’s a bit like a wedding really; playing to your strengths and not sweating the small stuff is always sound advice, and something I’ve certainly taken to heart. This time of year offers a wealth of opportunity to get creative with the décor and venue styling, but often it pays to call in the experts to save time, stress or costly mistakes.
We’re here to help with a Santa’s sack full of inspiration and local suppliers, including a showcase of creative talent from the region (page 65), cool seasonal decor (page 69), wintry colour palettes (page 70) and seasonal wedding tips from local experts (page 105) and more.
Enjoy! | |

New Place Hotel
If it’s historic grandeur you’re looking for, this breathtaking mansion is a must-see venue. Surrounded by 32 acres of parkland, it’s an idyllic big-day backdrop. Arrive through the wrought iron gates and be prepared for some stop-stare moments. The Grade I listed house, with its impressive brickwork exterior, combines Tudor and Elizabethan eccentricities with subtle, modern touches.
Encircled by picturesque landscaped gardens it offers a wealth of album-worthy photo opportunities. There’s even a cricket pitch, great for that quintessential English feel.
Licensed for ceremonies, there’s a choice of wonderful rooms and spaces for your whole celebration. You can tie the knot inside the mansion in the elegant Dining Room with views over the terrace and gardens or the Bristol Room, a traditional setting with oak panelling and a magnificent fireplace.
Alternatively, host your whole day in the Arden Suite, a self-contained private building located conveniently next to the lawns just a short walk from the manor house. With its own dedicated entrance and facilities to cater for everything from your ‘I dos’ to the last dance, the modern blank-canvas space can be personalised to suit your big-day theme. It offers a long traditional aisle and can host up to 110 guests for the ceremony and wedding breakfast plus a further 40 for the evening do. There’s a private terrace with outdoor seating and heating too; ideal as a chill out area when the party’s in full swing.
